Environmental I – Cleaner/Housekeeper

Alberta Health Services (AHS) is looking for a dependable, highly motivated individual for the position of Environmental Services I (cleaner/housekeeper) that is dedicated to both high-quality work and safety. This PT/Temp position is located at the Royal Alexandra Hospital. AHS will provide the necessary training to safely clean and disinfect patient rooms, clinical areas, office areas, and other common staff/public areas in accordance with AHS standards and practices. Other responsibilities may include cleaning and disinfecting medical equipment, and manual materials handling daily. Environmental Services is about more than providing a pleasant atmosphere, it is about ensuring hospitals and healthcare facilities are properly cleaned, disinfected, and maintained to provide a healthy environment for everyone. Shift schedules may include a combination of day, evening, nights, and weekend shifts.

As an Environmental I, you will be responsible for performing a variety of routine tasks associated with the cleaning and disinfecting of clinical and non-clinical healthcare environments. Your typical duties may include sweeping, mopping and vacuuming, restocking supplies in bathroom facilities and, stripping linen and remaking beds. This includes replenishing cleaning supplies and linens and identifying and reporting potential hazards to your Working Leader.

Completion of Grade 10 or equivalent. Knowledge and operation of a computer including Microsoft Office. Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time and perform repetitive movements for the duration of your shift. Physically capable to lift, push and pull up to 22 lbs of force.

The ability to operate a smartphone device is required. Basic computer knowledge to access email is required. To enable applicants to perform their duties safely, they must demonstrate the ability to read, write, speak, understand, and follow written and oral directions in English. Must be dependable, thorough and be able to work with minimal supervision. The ability to work with chemical cleaners is required. A combination of education, training and relevant experience may be considered. All new employees will be required to attend a 4-day Environmental Services Orientation and a 1-day AHS Orientation.

A minimum of 1 year of previous experience performing environmental cleaning duties in a hospital or institution is preferred. Previous knowledge and application of WHMIS is preferred. Previous Ergonomics and Workplace Health and Safety courses are an asset.
